Sullivan Ballou, an officer of the American Civil War, is remembered for the love letter he wrote to his wife one week before he died in battle. Inspired by this famous letter, I designed an expressive typographic book which focuses on the soldiers’ return home from war and the post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that consumed and devastated many of their lives. The name of this book, “Shell Shock,” is a term doctors once used to diagnose a patient with PTSD. Throughout the book, charcoal is used as a medium to resemble the explosions and debris that overwhelm a battlefield and the spot color of red is reminiscent of the bloodshed.
